Fireplace As mentioned in the introduction, the fireplace was the first product made from cans and the initial starting
point for the development of this new handcraft.
The need to improve the efficiency of open fireplaces is immense. 80 % of the energy consumption of
Lesotho and most deveolping countries is provided by bio mass. Wood is the major biomass fuel used and therefore the demand is higher than the supply and most developing countries are faced with an
increasing fuel wood shortage. In some countries, the shortage has changed people’s eating habbits since they can no more cook food due to lack of fuel supply. Luckly, in Lesotho the situation is not that bad
yet but the cutting of trees and uprooting of shrubs and bushes is increasing. Another contributing factor is the fact that fuel costs are increasing rapidly and people are losing jobs especially from the mines in
South Africa and privatised companies in Lesotho.
